Anime Expo was full of surprises on Saturday, but I don’t think anyone expected to get new information on the UZUMAKI anime adaptation that has been in production since the beginning of the global COVID-19 pandemic and has faced a planned production since then.

With long gaps between updates over the years, even the most dedicated Junji Ito fans could be forgiven for giving up on the production at various points over the past four years. On Saturday night, long-suffering fans holding out hope for the adaptation finally had their prayers answered with the unveiling of the anime’s English cast and Japanese main cast re-introduction during the Production IG x WIT x Signal MD Panel.

Prior to the cast announcement on Saturday, Junji Ito previously revealed that the first of four episodes of Uzumaki are completed and met with his approval in an extensive profile published by The Japan Times newspaper late last month. The anime is now slated for a premiere later this year on Adult Swim‘s Toonami block, after planned premieres in 2020, 2021 and 2022 were ultimately postponed to June 2022. The cast is listed below.

Viz Media describes Uzumaki:

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the retired boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but a pattern: UZUMAKI, the spiral—the hypnotic secret shape of the world. The bizarre masterpiece horror manga is now available all in a single volume. Fall into a whirlpool of terror!
