On Tuesday, July 9, the president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, confirmed that the singer from Barranquilla, Shakira, is the artist who will perform during the half-time of the Copa América final, which will be played on Sunday, July 14, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (USA).
It is the first time that there will be a musical performance during the break of a Copa America final. “He is a superstar who believed in greatness and who represents and magnifies Latin American greatness in the world,” Alejandro Domínguez said in a message on the social network X.
“Just like our football, the day of the final is going to be a festive final and there is no one better than Shakira to be with us to enjoy this great final,” he added.
The Barranquilla native already has experience in this type of performance. She made her debut in major sporting events at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where she performed Hips Don’t Lie/Bamboo during the closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
One of Shakira’s most iconic moments in the sporting world was her performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The song Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) became the official anthem of the tournament and a global phenomenon.
Shakira returned to the stage at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, performing La La La (Brazil 2014) at the closing ceremony at the Maracaná Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Her performance, full of energy and emotion, was one of the highlights of the event. She also sang at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Barranquilla Central American and Caribbean Games at the Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium and at the 2019 Davis Cup in Madrid.
In the middle of a dynamic of ‘quick questions’ with the Mexican-American subscription television channel ‘TUDN’, Shakira confirmed that she has been a soccer fan since she was little and revealed that the first game she attended was at the Roberto Meléndez Metropolitan Stadium, in Barranquilla, to watch Junior play.
The singer of ‘Acróstico’ considered that “what makes football special is that it unites people from so many countries, nationalities, regardless of language or cultural barriers.”
She was also asked what her favorite position in football is, to which she jokingly replied that “the one where she sings during the game or the one where she watches it from the comfort of her home.”
Finally, he sent a message to all football fans: “In this Copa America, support the best of our region, watch them shine and enjoy them a lot,” he concluded.
