Famous urban artists who joined Christian music

For spiritual or professional reasons, urban singers like Yandel, Wisin and Jay Wheeler have dared to make a musical ‘crossover’ by recording songs with religious content.

Whether for spiritual or professional reasons, urban artists such as Yandel, Wisin or Jay Wheeler have dared to make a musical ‘crossover’ by recording songs with religious content, a trend that was unusual and is increasing among reggaeton exponents.

Yandel, despite not having left secular music to follow the Gospel like Daddy Yankee, Héctor ‘El Father’ or Farruko did, collaborated at the end of last year on the remix of the song ‘Worthy Remix’, by the Christian singer Blanca Reyes.

“I am dedicating songs to Papa God,” the singer told EFE, who highlighted that ‘Worthy Remix’ contains a “motivating line,” and at the same time, “carries a positive message” to society.

In the Coliseum of Puerto Rico, the venue for the great reggaeton concerts, on the 18th – Good Friday – the musical show ‘One: One cross, one church, one faith’ will take place, in which more than a dozen Christian singers will perform, including Daniel Calveti.

Yandel felt “fear” about what they will say
According to Yandel, when he approached Reyes to collaborate, he felt “a little afraid, because he didn’t want people to give an opinion” about the reason for this issue.

“Later I questioned why I couldn’t do it, if it’s for God… You’re crazy!” said the reggaeton singer, a genre characterized by explicit lyrics about sex, drugs or violence, far from the traditional themes of Christian music.

In Reyes’ opinion, the collaboration with Yandel not only means “a moment of musical crossover” between an urban artist and a Christian, but “it is a testimony to the growing inclination of Latin urban artists to explore themes of faith and spirituality.”

“For me it is very beautiful. Everyone is in their own process, but music is so powerful that you can tell about your pain, any experience of faith and give testimony. And in that process, Yandel wanted to bring something more positive from his story and his opportunity to vent about what God has done in his life,” he added.

Wisin, his former duet partner, also made the musical leap by recording with the Dominican Christian singer Redimi2 the song ‘Calle Sin Salida’ in 2024.

Possibly, the first musical work that a renowned urban artist did with Christian themes was the rapper Vico C in his album ‘Con Poder’ (1996). Two years later, he presented his next production, ‘Aquel que had died’, where the Christian artist Funky participates in several songs.

“There is a thirst in the world,” says ‘El Father’

Other reggaeton artists who recorded religious songs are Daddy Yankee in ‘Coraza Divina’, while those who have collaborated with Christian artists include Ken-Y with Marcos Yaroide and Manny Montes, and Wheeler with Onell Díaz, son of music producer DJ Nelson, in the single ‘You have so much life’.

Other renowned urban artists such as Farruko, Luar La L and Dalex have even collaborated with Díaz.

In the opinion of former reggaeton player and now evangelical pastor Héctor ‘El Father’, “many of these artists are realizing that there is a thirst in the world, and they are using any tool, so that, from their format, they can give a glass of water to those who are thirsty.”

During the last half of the 1990s and early 2000s, Delgado was one of the most sought-after and internationally renowned urban artists until he decided to retire in 2008 after converting to Christianity and becoming a pastor.

According to the now pastor Héctor Delgado – El Father’s first name – some of these urban artists “are part-time and God wants them full-time,” as happened with himself.

“And more are coming,” said Delgado about other reggaeton artists who will announce their Christian conversion, just as Daddy Yankee, Farruko, Julio Voltio, Gocho, Larry Over, among others, did.
