I really don’t say this lightly, but the Top Comics to Buy for June 5 might be the hardest one of these lists that I’ve ever had to narrow down. It’s often tricky business to just pick five comics to recommend, but this week was brutal. This could have easily been a top eight list. It’s just a loaded week, and there’s so much to love for weekly comics sickos like you and me.
You can find the five picks that I did settle on below, along with the usual lists… enjoy!
Top Comics to Buy for June 5, 2024
The Boy Wonder #2
Writer/Artist: Juni Ba
Colorist: Chris O’Halloran
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar
Publisher: DC Comics – Black Label
Jason Todd is the exile prince of Batman’s kingdom, stalking Gotham’s darkest alleys and eternally turning his face from the light of day–all because he cannot quench the burning flame of anger and retribution that consumes his heart. Can Damian learn from Jason’s mistakes? Or is the reflective mask of the Red Hood doomed to be a mirror held up to his own future?
Why It’s Cool: One of the most interesting cartoonist in comics is doing a deep dive into the characters who have been Robin over the years, using Damian Wayne as almost a sort of framing device to do it. The visual storytelling in this series is so good. It’s an absolute must-read comic.

Precious Metals #1
Writer: Darcy Van Poelgeest
Artist: Ian Bertram
Colorist: Matt Hollingsworth
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Publisher: Image Comics
Thirty-five years before the events of LittleBird Volume 1: The Fight for Elder’s Hope, disillusioned mod-tracker Max Weaver’s routine hunt for a modified child takes a grisly and unexpected turn. Now, saddled with an unpredictable mod who may be the key to unlocking his missing memories of him, Max will soon find that he is n’t the only one interested in the child’s unique abilities-and if he wants to know more, it’s going to cost him everything.
Why It’s Cool: This is the follow-up to Little Bird, a visionary miniseries that still feels years ahead of its time. And in this first issue, the creative team is right back at it. It’s really hard to overstate how ambitious this comic is, both in terms of the visuals and the ideas driving its plot. Can’t wait to see what else this six-issue miniseries has in store. If this debut is any indication, I won’t be able to predict it, but it sure will be a joy to read.

Profane #1
Writer: Peter Milligan
Artist: Raul Fernandez
Colorist: Giada Marchisio
Letterer: Jeff Eckleberry
Publisher: BOOM! Studios
Solving murders in Los Angeles is the daily bread of private detective Will Profane, but something is strange about his latest case. When every clue points toward a famous detective novelist at the center of this mystery, Will’s world will transform into something truly unreal.
Why It’s Cool: Peter Milligan — who for my money is one of the most underrated writers in all of comics — teams with Raul Fernandez on a stunning new noir book that has way more going on than you might suspect at first blush (or, really, within the first 10 pages too…). This is a smart comic that starts a mystery responsible to hook you for its full run. I loved it.
Price: $4.99
Scarlett #1
Writer: Kelly Thompson
Artist: Marco Ferrari
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics – Skybound
Shana “Scarlett” O’Hara is about to take on the most dangerous black ops mission of her career: infiltrating the mysterious rising power in Japan known as the Arashikage Clan. Her one lead of her is her former partner of her -Jinx-turned Arashikage enforcer. Now, Scarlett must use her very particular set of skills to survive undercover… and discover a shocking weapon that could change the balance of power on Earth. Red-hot writer Kelly Thompson and artist Marco Ferrari introduce some of the most anticipated characters to the Energon Universe in ways you’ll never expect!
Why It’s Cool: This is the latest miniseries within the Energon Universe, which is arguably the hottest thing happening in monthly comics. Like its predecessors, it’s a well-done comic that introduces classic characters to this new shared world in an interesting way. Being part of something larger helps, but this is a great action comic on its own merits, and an easy choice for this weeks Top Comics to Buy for June 5.
Price: $4.99
The Ultimates #1
Writer: Deniz Camp
Artist: Juan Frigeri
Colorist: Federico Blee
Letterer: Travis Lanham
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Six months ago, Tony Stark sent Peter Parker a radioactive spider to set him back on the course to become Spider-Man. Since then, Iron Lad (Stark), Captain America, Doom, Thor and Sif have begun to do the same for other lost heroes, building a network of super-powered heroes hungry for change… Now they must band together to destroy the Maker’s Council and restore freedom and free will to a world ruled from the shadows!
Why It’s Cool: This book is the latest addition to Marvel’s excellent new line of Ultimate Universe comics, and with this first issue, it positions itself as arguably the headliner of the bunch, picking up threads from Ultimate Universe #1 as he assembles his team. It’s also just a really great read, filled with fantastic art, smart character moments and strong scripting. I loved it.
