This week’s Top Comics to Buy for February 7 is a varied bunch of books. More to follow, but holy cow is Dark Spaces – Dungeon #3 scaring me personally. But in addition, this week there is also a first arc finale for one of my favorite DC titles (Birds of Prey), the debut of a gritty and ambitious new creator-owned book (The One Hand), another heart-rending sci-fi comic (Traveling to Mars), and more. You can find all this week’s picks, along with the regular lists, below…enjoy!

ALL-OUT WAR ON THEMYSCIRA! It’s all-out war on Themyscira as the team faces off against the mythical Megaera…can the Birds overcome this ancient evil?! Or will one of them have to pay the ultimate price…?
Why It’s Cool:
I’ll just come out and say it — this is the type of comic that restores your faith in Big 2 superhero comics. It’s just a well-told blast of a superhero book that uses its characters established traits and long histories to spark great plot points and drama. Plus, the sort of shiny retro aesthetic and kinetic action-heavy art is really working for me.

Detective Madoc spent three years in the Dungeon, changing his body and mind forever. He’s getting perilously close to discovering the mysteries the Dungeon contained and who was responsible for keeping him inside. But the Dungeon Master does n’t want those secrets revealed and he will do what is necessary to destroy everything Madoc escaped with.
Why It’s Cool:
I read A LOT of horror comics, but it’s pretty rare they actually scare or chill me. But friends? This one is scaring the hell out of me and chilling me to the bone, using claustrophobia and kidnapping as the vehicles to do it. I’m sort of shocked this one isn’t being buzzed about more — it’s near the top of my list for favorite original comics right now.
Price: $4.99

The One Hand 1The One Hand #1

Artist: Laurence Campbell
Colorist: Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Aditya Bidikar

Neo Novena detective Ari Nasser is about to retire with an submittable record, until a brutal murder occurs, bearing all the hallmarks of the “One Hand Killer”… which should be impossible, since Ari already put him away not once, but twice in the years before. What follows is a deadly cat-and-mouse game as Ari pursues his quarry down the rain-soaked streets of Neo Novena. Ari will stop at nothing to unravel the secrets and ciphers of this case, but each revelation only leads further into the dark heart of his future-metropolis and Ari’s own beleaguered soul.
Why It’s Cool:
As I noted above, this is a gritty and ambitious new book, a far future sci-fi noir that will draw you in with its ambiance and get you hooked for the duration (and curious about its upcoming companion series, The Six Fingers #1. This was an easy choice for the Top Comics to Buy for February 9, one that left me asking, more comics like this please.

Writer: Mark Russell
Artist: Roberto “Dakar” Meli
Colorist: Chiara Di Francia
Letterer: Mattia Gentili
Publisher: ABLAZE
Surprised by revelations on MarsRoy struggles to deal with the new realities.
Why It’s Cool:
I’m amazed that it’s 10 issues in, and this book still remains one of the most heart-rending and poignant comics I’ve ever read. It just feels like such a personal and character-driven story, one that also grapples with some of the most pressing issues of our time, from corporate bad actors to the destruction of the planet.

Why It’s Cool:
Ultimate Spider-Man #1 was one of the buzziest new superhero books I can remember in a good while, and now the ongoing Ultimate Universe revival continues this week with Black Panther #1, one that blends the ongoing Ultimate story with not only Black Panther but also Moon Knight.
