The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) This Friday, he condemned “the attempted coup d’état by the Public Ministry of Guatemala” due to the attempt by prosecutors Rafael Curruchiche and Leonor Morales to annul the country’s general elections.
In a statement, the office of the organization’s general secretary, Luis Almagro, requested the country’s president, Alejandro Giammattei; to the Constitutional Court; the Supreme Court of Justice and Congress to act against the “perpetrators of this attack” for “defend institutions and constitutional order”.

According to the General Secretariat, “The attempt to annul this year’s general elections constitutes the worst form of democratic breakdown and the consolidation of a political fraud against the will of the people”.

The declaration by the central body of the OAS comes shortly after the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) of Guatemala declared invalid the general elections won this year by Bernardo Arévalo de León for alleged administrative irregularities of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
The Public Ministry also initiated a new case against Arévalo de León, related to the constitution and financing of the party. Seed Movementand asked for the withdrawal of his immunity.
Since it surprisingly won the Guatemalan presidential elections on June 25, the Public Ministry, led by Attorney General Consuelo Porras, has tried on several occasions to reverse the verdict of the polls.
The actions of the Prosecutor’s Office led the United States to sanction the leadership of the Guatemalan Public Ministry on July 12 for corruption.
