Richie Hawtin celebrates the 30th anniversary of his iconic acid techno album ‘music‘, released in 1994 when he was a key figure in the Detroit underground scene, under his alias Plastikmansecond album and successor to ‘SheetOne’from 1993. In that context, this album expanded its minimalist and avant-garde approach to techno and was performed live for the first time, in an old Detroit factory decorated with sheets of black plastic.

Before the arrival of the full album, the single ‘Plastique’described by the magazine Q as ‘a rhythmic and feline sound, with intense percussion and deep subbass‘ announced an album with a more danceable style, although with a dark and mysterious tone. This reissue will be remastered in an ecological vinyl format and ensures to revive the raw and minimalist sound that characterized it.

December 6, 2024 will be the official launch through NovaMute and includes several hits such as ‘Freek’, ‘Kriket’that the fashion designer Raf Simons used for Prada earlier this year, along with ‘Marbles’ and ‘Fuk’which thanks to its hypnotic sounds continue to seduce electronic lovers, quickly reaching a wide audience.

Richie Hawtin I 30th Anniversary of Musik

After its launch, Plastikman appeared at important events such as Glastonbury, Tribal Gathering and Megadogwhere the magazine NME described it as ‘more intense than Orbital, funkier than Prodigy and more danceable than any other proposal on stage‘.

The acid-stained album art sparked controversy at the time of its release and the album is considered the pioneering work with which the British-Canadian made himself known to the world. Without a doubt, it is one of the most influential albums in techno music, which since its original publication in 1994, redefined the genre and consolidated Hawtin as a key figure on the global scene. The album remains a benchmark in the genre, having received critical acclaim and being described as ‘sinisterly danceable’.

Considered ‘music like never heard before’ by Guardian and one ‘masterpiece’ by The Wirewhich included it among its Albums of the Year, the album became a techno milestone with an influence that still persists. Thirty years later, to celebrate its anniversary, the album has been remastered from the original tapes, reminding us of the relevance of Plastikman and the strength of this album, which remains as impressive on the dance floor as it is off it.

In tune with growing environmental awareness, this special 30th anniversary edition will be released in biovinyl and its packaging will be made from sustainable materials. Pre-order your copy of the 30th anniversary reissue of ‘Musik’of Plastikman, here.
