Meduza have spent this year putting records out at a pace I cannot keep up with, and Weekend is number five. This one Khalid has on it, out July 17 on Island, and on paper it is the most obvious good idea they have had all year.
The label calls it a sun-kissed groove under a laid-back deep house ambience, which is a fussy way of saying Meduza built a warm floor and let Khalid do the aching. That’s the whole crossover trick when it works. The production stays underground enough to survive a club, the topline is big enough to survive a car park at 2am. Put it on for the walk home when the night has been good to you.
“Working with Khalid was an incredible experience from start to finish,” Meduza said. “He’s the kind of artist who cares deeply about every detail, and watching that level of dedication in the studio was truly inspiring.” Khalid is not a stranger around here either. I have turned up on Calvin Harris’ Rollin years ago.
Out now on Island. Go play it, and keep the Meduza page open, because at this rate there is another one coming next month.
