“Brazil strongly repudiates last night’s attack. Political violence is an affront to the democratic values that we must all protect,” Lula, who is recovering from two medical procedures in which he treated a skin injury and tendonitis in his hand, said on his social networks.

The 80-year-old progressive leader, candidate for re-election next October, also expressed his solidarity with the first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, and with “everyone present at the dinner with correspondents in Washington.”
Trump and other senior officials in his government had to be evacuated in the rush to dinner by the secret services after an armed man tried to enter the event, which was being held at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
The Republican leader later explained in a press conference that the aggressor was a “madman” and a “lone wolf” who did not breach the security perimeter where he was dining accompanied, among others, by the vice president, JD Vance, among hundreds of journalists and politicians.

Although there have been some bilateral diplomatic clashes in recent weeks, Lula and Trump have already met in person and have had several telephone conversations since September of last year, despite their enormous ideological differences.
Both leaders were scheduled to meet again last March at the White House, but the meeting was postponed due to the war in Iran and still has no date.
