After the eruption, the JMA increased its alert for this volcano by one level – to level three of a maximum of five.

The move from level two, which restricts the approach to the crater, to three implies that the approach to the volcano itself has been restricted.

The island of Suwanose, belonging to the Kagoshima prefecture, is less than 30 square kilometers and has around 70 inhabitants.

Mount Ontake joins two other volcanoes currently on level three alert in Kagoshima, Kuchinoerabu Island, which activated this level last July, and Sakurajima , located in front of the prefectural capital and at level three from the summer of 2022.
