The Congress of with a conservative majority, declared to the deputies of as independentwithout a political party, reducing their power to maneuver before the social democrat is sworn in as president of the country.

With 83 votes in favor, 26 against and 51 absences, The outgoing Parliament decided to ignore the 23 deputies of the Semilla Movement, from Arévalo, as a benchfor the new legislature, by virtue of a judicial suspension of that party for alleged irregularities in its creation.

According to the organic law of the Guatemalan Congress, deputies declared “independent” cannot be part of the board of directors of the unicameral parliament or working commissions to support possible legislative initiatives that the future president may propose.

The Semilla party was suspended at the request of the prosecutor’s office, which opened an investigation into alleged irregularities in the constitution of the political group in 2017.

After about five hours of delay, the solemn session culminated with the closing of the ninth legislature to swear in the new one for the next four years.

The new deputies will elect the one-year board of directors, whose president will be in charge of swearing in the new president, who has overcome months of judicial persecution that sought to prevent the inauguration.

Meanwhile, thousands of people who gather in the capital’s central square waiting for Arévalo’s message and who follow the session in Congress on giant screens, applaud the names of the new Semilla deputies, while they boo the congressmen who considered “corrupt.”
