Cornish artist Essy Sparrow wins the debut Boardmasters Breaking competition and will open the main stage on Sunday

Boardmasters have long been a supporter of Cornish artists but their latest competition ‘Boardmasters Breaking’ takes it to the next level. For the first time, artists are able to submit their music to the festival via BBC Introducing and then the artist is selected by the two bodies. The competition is open to not just Cornish artists but the wider south-west and 1000’s of people applied. The prize from this competition is a chance to open the main stage on the Sunday. It’s a huge opportunity for any artist and gives them the chance to play to thousands of eager festival goers.

Of the number of artists applied though there can only be one winner and this year we’re excited to announce that the winner is none other than Cornwall’s own Essy Sparrow. An artist that locally needs no introduction and on a larger scale is using her social media to grow to new heights. The indie-folk sounds that have been deemed as ‘Coastal Pop’ by Essy will be the perfect soundtrack to open the Cornish festival.

You can listen to Essy’s latest cut ‘Vinyl Spinning’ here:

This single is taken from her upcoming ‘Gossip From A Coastal Town‘ EP which is out 2nd October 2026. Speaking on the EP Essy explains it as: “gossip-filled indie folk time capsule” adding, “Some of these songs are true, some are exaggerated and some are straight up lies for fun,” says Essy. “I became obsessed with the idea of writing music like rumors – emotional snapshots rather than perfect autobiographical truth.”
