A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook the southern region this Monday causing at least two deaths, one injured and the evacuation of some 7,000 people, state media reported this Monday.

The earthquake occurred in the Liunan district (Liuzhou city) at 00:21 local time (16:21 GMT on Sunday) at a depth of eight kilometers, according to the China Seismological Networks Center, which located the epicenter at the coordinates 24.38 degrees north latitude and 109.26 degrees east longitude.

According to the network, the survivor was rescued with stable vital signs and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The shaking was felt in several cities in Guangxi, including Liuzhou, Guilin and the regional capital, Nanning, according to state media.

The Liuzhou Anti-Seismic and Relief Response Headquarters activated an emergency protocol after the earthquake and coordinated the emergency services, firefighters and public security for the search, rescue and transfer of the affected population.

The authorities also began a review of homes, water and electricity supply systems, main roads, bridges, mines and points at risk of geological disasters.

In a previous assessment, the headquarters had reported that, until 04:00 local time (20:00 GMT on Sunday), the earthquake had caused the collapse of 13 homes and the transfer of four people to the hospital, all of them out of danger.

The authorities then added that more than 7,000 locals were evacuated and that communications, electricity supply, water supply, gas and roads in the affected area were functioning normally.

In addition to the main earthquake, other seismic movements of lower intensity were recorded.

The authorities reported five earthquakes of magnitudes between 2.2 and 3.2 before and after the main tremor, and the China Seismological Networks Center recorded at 07:41 local time (23:41 GMT on Sunday) an aftershock of magnitude 3.3 in Liunan, 10 kilometers deep.

The social sectors that are calling for the resignation of the president of Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, massed road blockades in different regions of the country this Monday, May 11, on a day also marked by a teachers’ strike and protests by the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), which entered its second week of complaints against the Government’s economic policies.
