We already know Dragon Age: The Veilguard will have romance and spicy scenes. That’s par for the course with a BioWare RPG in a post-Mass Effect world. But sounds like the upcoming game in the beloved fantasy series isn’t restricting nudity to when protagonist Rook and his chosen partner are getting it on. What is still unclear is whether it will show everything This time around, but BioWare isn’t shutting down the possibility.
Game Informer published an article as part of its ongoing July cover story confirming there was topless nudity in The Veilguard‘s character creatora first for the franchise. From a practical standpoint, this is helpful during the character creation process if you want your Rook’s body to look a certain way, it’s easier to do that when their shirt is off. Game Informer Asked if there would be nudity elsewhere in the game, to which director Corrine Busche responded, “This is a mature RPG.”
As for whether or not Dragon Age: The Veilguard will follow Baldur’s Gate 3’s example and including genitalia, BioWare apparently told Game Informer the studio wants fans to discover for themselves. That isn’t a resounding “yes,” but it’s a weirdly evasive answer if it’s “no.” Not to say that it’s impossible that they would avoid giving a direct answer if it’s disappointing news, but that’s also just setting yourself up for backlash if you tease discovering something that’s not there. Notably, you can customize your Rook’s bulge in the character creator, but it remains to be seen if that goes anywhere beyond how their underwear fits them.
Nudity has become a pretty standard affair in BioWare games over the years. The original Mass Effect came under fire from hilariously out-of-touch conservative media back in the day for some sex-negative misinformation. Mass Effect 2‘s sex scenes lacked the same spice, though nudity and more explicit sex scenes returned in Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda. Dragon Age had a similar trajectory: Dragon Age: Origins had implied nudity obscured by very intentional camera angles in its sex scenes, but most of its nudity came from humanoid creatures like The Mother. Dragon Age II is arguably one of the tamest entries in BioWare’s modern catalog as far as nudity goes, but Inquisition offered the most explicit exposition BioWare had dealt with at the time, with full tits and ass shots throughout. If The Veilguard continues to escalate as Mass Effect did, it will likely live up to the “mature RPG” label Busche gives it.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S this fall. While we don’t know how explicit its sex scenes will be, we do know that all seven of its companions will be romanceable by any variation of Rook.
