Thunderstorms and strong winds left 110,000 homes without power in eastern Australiawhere a falling tree killed a woman, authorities reported Tuesday.
The storm caused damagecatastrophic” by knocking down power lines in Brisbanecapital of the state of queenslandand the region of Gold Coastreported the electric company Energex.

“It’s not easy to say that but some customers will be without power for days. We are seeing widespread, catastrophic damage on a cyclone scale.“, indicated the company on social networks.
“We receive more damage reports every minute”.
The Queensland Ambulance Service said a 59-year-old woman was killed by a falling tree on the Gold Coast.
“Unfortunately he suffered a serious head injury and died. We couldn’t revive it“commented the paramedic Jay Newtonwho was at the site.
Another fallen tree trapped a woman in her car for more than an hour, the paramedic told reporters.

“It was like a disaster zone, there were trees all over the road” Newton recounted, describing how the winds uprooted trees and toppled roofs.
The Met Office forecast severe thunderstorms, strong gusts of wind and heavy rain with hail for Tuesday.
It also issued a flood alert for a river about 40km from the Gold Coast.
