When I was putting together my five recommendations to lead this week’s comics to buy for January 15 list, I was struck by just how many DC Comics releases were in contention. Ultimately, I landed on New Gods and The Question as my two picks, but I could have easily included at least two other calendars (those being Challengers of the Unknown and Green Lantern: Fractured Spectrum). It all speaks, I think, to a publisher that’s taking big risks while also drilling down into the continuity of their shared universe. It’s working.

But, of course, DC wasn’t the only publisher putting out strong single issues this week, and I enjoyed quite a few other books as well. I did the always-tough job of narrowing it down to a final list of five, which you can find below, along with the usual set of release lists…enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for January 15

FML 3FML #3
Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick
Artist: David Lopez
Colorist: Chris Peter
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
As wildfires edge closer to Portland, unexpected challenges hit Riley’s band, STFU. Riley’s transformation complicates their audition for HeavyFest, leading Lydia to “help” with her heavy metal… trombone. Meanwhile, Patti prepares for an impending interview at True Crime Con LIVE about a book yet unwritten, and unknowingly steps closer to a grim mystery. When a dead body surfaces at the Witch’s House, secrets threaten to unravel. Tune in for a narrative rich in dark humor and suspense, where every note and clue draws us deeper into the chaos.
Why It’s Cool: This fantastic comic continues to you what one might call magical realism to tell an interesting family story for 2025, one set in a hip enclave in Portland. I really like the characters in this book, the way things like monsters bled seamlessly into the world here, and the storylines being split between mother and children. There’s really not another book like this one. Oh, and the artwork is excellent.
Price: $4.99

New Gods 2New Gods #2
Writer: Ram V.
Artist: Evan Cagle, with Jesse Lonergan
Colorist: Francesco Segala
Letterer: Tom Napolitano
Publisher: DC Comics
Mr. Miracle has found himself at a crossroads. Presented with a terrible choice by his brother Orion, he must decide between venting out to save a child he has never met–a new god made manifest–or stay home to raise a child of his own. Meanwhile, an evil awakens, driven mad by an obsession with a dead god, and sets its sights on this same child. Several forces, of good and evil, converge on this child as his latent powers begin to reveal themselves to the world. And while these dramas play out on Earth, the forces of an intergalactic inquisition march ever closer.
Why It’s Cool: Simply put, this book has been an absolute stunner, in both the art and the ambitions of its story. It feels epic in scope in a way that a book about new gods should. It’s also bringing in guest pages from some of the most interesting artists in comics (last issue it was Jorge Fornes, this time it’s Jesse Lonergan). This was my first pick for this week’s comics to buy for January 15 list.
Price: $3.99

Nights 12Nights #12
Writer: Wyatt Kennedy
Artist: Luigi Formisano
Colorist: Francesco Segala, with Gloria Martinelli
Letterer: Maria Letizia Mirabella
Editor/Executive Story Editor: Alana Fox
Publisher: Image Comics
No more jokes. No more teases. No more misdirections. Gray’s destiny is at last revealed. An old enemy reemerges to deliver unbelievable carnage, and no one is safe. This is the end of everything you’ve known and the start of something new. It’s an issue with such massive consequences, we needed more pages to tell it! Everything comes to a head in a status-quo shifting season finale. Goodbye, Saint Peter. Hello, end of the world.
Why It’s Cool: This issue is the extra-sized second arc finale for a book that has quietly become one of the most eclectic and stylish comics today. It’s a heavy-action comic that really seems to have some major repercussions for Nights status quo.
Price: $4.99

The Question 3The Question: All Along the Watchtower #3
Writer: Alex Segura
Artist: Cian Tormey
Colorist: Romulo Fajardo, Jr.
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
As the mystery hovering over the JL Watchtower deepens, the Question–reeling from two brutal battles–must overcome his own self-doubt to get to the core of a mystery that threatens not only her but the entire Justice League. But can Renee, so far from home and the support system she built in Gotham, rely on the team she’s built around her to stave off disaster? And what does this mystery have to do with the Atom Project?
Why It’s Cool:
Writer Alex Segura is a best-selling crime/noir novelist, and it really shows in this new miniseries starring The Question, who is investigating a mystery on the new JL Watchtower. This issue gives us the full scope of what (and who) she’s up against, and it’s such a fun reveal. There’s also a bunch of intercontinuity here with other strong DC books, like Challengers of the Unknown and The Atom Project.

$3.99

Ultimate Wolverine 1Ultimate Wolverine #1
Writer: Chris Condon
Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio
Colorist: Bryan Valenza
Letterer: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
From rising star Chris Condon (That Texas Blood) and MOON KNIGHT powerhouse artist Alessandro Cappuccio comes the story of the ULTIMATE WOLVERINE! In order to maintain control of their corner of the Maker’s world, three members of his council—Magik, Colossus and Omega Red—deploy their most lethal asset: The Winter Soldier! But WHO is the weapon behind the mask?
Why It’s Cool: This is an absolutely brutal Wolverine comic that expands the scope of the excellent new Ultimate Universe. It looks great and reads like a berserker rage. Don’t miss this book.
