The UN Security Council will meet on Wednesday, January 31, following the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague to ask Israel to avoid genocidal acts in Gaza, the organization’s presidency announced on Friday.

The meeting was called by Algeria, whose foreign minister said it would have the objective of giving “binding effect of the ruling of the International Court of Justice on the provisional measures imposed on the Israeli occupation”.

The UN supreme court also asked Israel to take “immediate measures” to enable the provision of aid “which the Palestinians urgently need”. However, the court did not call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip..

Since October 7, when the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated, the UN Security Council has been deeply divided on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

Due to this, it has only been able to agree on two resolutions due to the rejection of numerous drafts, the lack of sufficient votes or due to vetoes from the United States, Russia or China.

The attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas killed more than 1,140 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
