The headliner for this week’s Top Comics to Buy for October 9, 2024 is, obviously, Absolute Batman #1a comic you’ve likely heard all about if you follow the direct market even a little bit. But that’s not the only big release of the week. You can find my usual five top recommendations below, along with the full release lists for this Wednesday… enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for October 9, 2024

Absolute Batman 1Absolute Batman #1
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Nick Dragotta
Colorist: Frank Martin
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Publisher: DC Comics
BATMAN LEGEND SCOTT SNYDER AND ICONIC ARTIST NICK DRAGOTTA TRANSFORM THE DARK KNIGHT’S TALE FOR THE MODERN AGE! Without the mansion…without the money…without the butler…what’s left is the Absolute Dark Knight!
Why It’s Cool: Let’s be real…you saw the new character design and were probably going to buy this book based on that alone. I mean, it’s a new vision for Batman, and if there’s something most comics fans can’t resist, it’s that. I won’t spoil any more about this book, but I definitely recommend it. Check back to The Beat tomorrow for a full review.

Action Comics 1070Action Comics #1070
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Clayton Henry
Colorist: Matt Herms
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
Publisher: DC Comics
An otherworldly horror, tearing its way through Metropolis, has emerged from the Phantom Zone. Something’s wrong in the Zone–something terrible–and Superman must enter alone to find out what! From the pages of Absolute Power and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest comes a new Action epic unlike any you’ve seen before from the visionary creative team of Mark Waid and Clayton Henry! Plus, the Woman of Tomorrow is here today! Supergirl Special’s Mariko Tamaki and Skylar Patridge return to bring Kara to the farthest reaches of space in pursuit of a mysterious threat only she can handle.
Why It’s Cool: While the Absolute books are soaking up a lot of the attention, over the past two weeks the new DC Comics All In launches have all quietly been excellent, none more so than the start of this new Action Comics story arc It’s got a fantastic story setup that feels so obvious you can’t believe it’s never been done before. Oh, and Clayton Henry has somehow leveled up his artwork again.

Autumn Kingdom 2The Autumn Kingdom #2
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Christopher Mitten
Colorist: Francesco Segala
Letterer: Taylor Esposito
Publisher: Oni Press
Sisters Sommer and Winter are shaken and bewildered in the wake of a goblin horde smashing apart their family’s vacation cabin and absconding into the night with their parents. But the mysterious, jagged, hulking sword they stumbled on as they fled into the forest offers the young girls surprising strength, agility, and a vicious means to fight back. When they seek shelter with an old couple in the woods, they learn the truth behind the monsters, the fairies, the withering realm known as the Autumn Kingdom, and the deadly sacrifice it requires. . .
Why It’s Cool: Holy cow, look at that Christopher Mitten artwork! That alone is enough to sell me on this book, but if that wasn’t enough, Cullen Bunn scripts a reliably fun blurred reality fantasy comic that will leave you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next.
Price: $4.99

night of the slashers 1Night of the Slashers #1
Writer: Cavan Scott
Artist: Paul Fry
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Publisher: Magma Comix
Hill Creek is a lovely place to visit… except the one night of the year its citizens transform into bloodthirsty maniacs! Of course, that’s the very night Lara’s bus breaks down, stranding the disillusioned teen and her classmates in the secluded town. Secrets uncovered, terror at every turn-will anyone survive the night?
Why It’s Cool: This is not just a slasher comic. This is a slashers comic. Plural. As the name implies, it’s very much a slasher story that deals in excess. And while this first issue is just the start of things (obviously), it’s a fun, teen break with sporadic bursts of violence, just as one would expect from this concept.
Price: $3.99

Space Ghost 6Space Ghost #6
Writer: David Pepose
Artist: Jonathan Lau
Colorist: Andrew Dalhouse
Letterer: Taylor Esposito
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
After the shattering events of issue #5, Robo-Corp is working hard to keep the forces of the Galactic Federation busy and distracted. To that end, they’re bringing in their heaviest hitter to aid in their evil scheme – MOLTAR!
Why It’s Cool: This is a book that goes hard. It feels like it’s not content with just being entertaining, and it instead wants to be a pressure cooker of a ride through all of Space Ghost’s villains and mythology. It also looks great. This one was a no-brainer for the Top Comics to Buy for October 9.
