The biggest copyright lawsuit in the history of reggaeton.

More than 150 artists and music companies face one of the largest copyright lawsuits in the history of reggaeton.
Among the featured artists are Bad Bunny and Karol G.
Jamaican duo Steely & Clevie maintain that the iconic rhythm pattern known as the dembow was used without permission.
Their claim is based on the song Fish Market, published in 1989, from which they allege the rhythm that later became the basis of reggaeton comes from.
In July 2026, a federal judge determined that the case will continue and that it will be up to a jury to decide whether the rhythm pattern is protected by copyright and whether the sued songs infringed those rights.

The outcome of the trial could set a historic precedent for the music industry, as it would define whether a rhythmic element as influential as dembow can receive protection under copyright laws and what impact it would have on hundreds of hits in the urban genre.
