Sónar has done it again. And so much so that she has done it again. Today, the more than established county festival has presented its 70 first names and the analysis we can make about it is as broad as it is simple: Sónar 2024 will once again be one of the most interesting events of the year, if not the most. Let’s talk about it!
Established artists, exclusive b2b, totally unpublished lives and showssupport for the figures who have built this scene, artists emerging but very interesting and the purpose of searching radical aesthetics and disruptive are some of the headlines that we can anticipate from an edition that promises to once again lead the way for a large part of the music industry and that, as usual, will bring together thousands of clubbers and personalities from said industry.
On June 13, 14 and 15, 2024, Sónar will once again turn Barcelona into the world capital of electronic culture. Sónar 2024 will cover the entire spectrum of contemporary electronics with artists, DJs and performers who navigate between all types of genres. We start by highlighting shows like the exclusive and innovative ‘Overdrive’ by Charlotte DeWitte, Kaytranada, Jessie Ware, the always romantic live of Ben Boehmerthe A/V show of Folamour or the always spectacular performance of Floating Points.
The top names don’t end there, since we can also enjoy artists as interesting as Vince Staples, Toya Delazy, the Chicago house of Kerri Chandler, the unmistakable rhythm of The Martinez Brothers, the forceful and always fun live of Reinier Zonneveld, Olof Dreijer, quality techno with Surgeon & Speedy J, TOMMY CASH, Marlon Hoffstadt aka DJ Daddy Tranceone of the DJs called to be a trend in the next five years, Skin On Skinan incontestable b2b of Hector Oaks and Partiboi69 or an even more amazing b2b Eliza Rose, Dan Shake and Sally C. There will be space for pop with both funk and flamenco influences from the precocious and promising Judelineas well as for the synth-pop-laced rap of CASISDEADthe introspection and reflection of the rapper and thinker KAMAUUavant-garde electronics with spoken-word elements of Marie Davidson and the ultra-processed and distorted pop of LaFrancesssa.
The depth and delicacy of Ana Roxanne accompanied by DJ Python forming Natural Wonder Beauty Concept (and featuring his eponymous downtempo album), the recent fusion of African percussion and electronic sounds in the key of r&b and neo-soul by Bikôkôthe afro-rave aesthetic rap of Toya Delazythe sentimentality of pablopablothe collision of Dyce influences, the baroque shadows of Adelaidethe nostalgia of LOVE and the producers and vocalists Ela Minus and yunè pinku will also have a lot to say, literally.
The most contemplative and exploratory audience will find allies in the rough textures of the duo EMPTYSETthe rhythms as intimate as they are complex of Loraine James and the piano prepared Kelly Moran. At the other end of the spectrum is Olof Dreijerknown for being half of the duo The Knife, and, along with him, other experimental and daring artists, such as the unpredictable Japanese selector ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$Uthe rising star of bass music Surusinghe and the Galician sound researcher Akazie. This list is completed by a varied selection of artists who give new forms and styles to club music: Slim Soledad, DJ Gigola, DJ Fucci, Taahliah, Coco Em, moktar, SHYBOI and TNTC.
As usual, Sónar 2024 will once again be much more than music, line-up and dance floor. The 12th edition of Sónar+D, the annual event not to be missed for professionals in the creative industries, art, research and technology, will be held in the heart of Sónar by Day and will feature audiovisual conferences on the coexistence of technology with nature and creativity. There will also be masterclasses, discussion forums, professional meetings and more activities to delve deeper into AI and its impact on artistic disciplines such as music, sound, film, gaming and alternative realities. The meeting will once again offer two exclusive morning sessions on Thursday, June 13 and Friday, June 14. From early in the afternoon, it will be open, almost in its entirety, to the entire Sónar by Day audience.
The prestigious contemporary artist and architect Tomas Saracenoknown for his explorations of new sustainable ways of living and perceiving the environment, will break down the links between art, life sciences and social sciences. David Gruber, founder and project director CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative) and featured in The New Yorker this year, will reveal how he is managing to translate the language of sperm whales on the Caribbean island of Dominica using Artificial Intelligence and machine learning. The other big focus will be the use they make of Artificial Intelligence from a playful, practical and palpable perspective Nicole L’HuillierChilean transdisciplinary artist and PhD in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT, and Martha Green, technologist, visual artist and professor at the Berklee College of Music in Valencia. Both will present masterclasses to present their work.
