One of my favorite places to visit at any comic convention is Artist Alley. While some pretty big creators may have tables there, especially at the larger shows, there are plenty of small presses and independent artists and writers selling their work. And if you hang around and look, you are sure to find awesome books and artwork you may not find anywhere else.
Last weekend I headed to Morristown, NJ for Garden State Comic Fest, one of my favorites to attend annually. This week’s Small Press Spotlight offers a peek at what I saw.
First, I had to stop by and say hello to writer Fabian Nicieza. Although not small press, I’ve interviewed the Deadpool co-creator a few times and it was nice to meet him in person. Nicieza is always friendly and fun to chat with, so if you see him on the guest list at your next show, stop by and say hi.
Heading into Artist Alley, I spotted JM DeSantis. A staple at many East Coast conventions, DeSantis is a prolific writer and artist, particularly in the dark fantasy and horror genres. Check out works such as Chadhiyana and his publishing company Dark Fire Press.
Artist Megan Rabbit displayed her unique style and offered a nice change of pace on the show floor. Her sketches were a bright spot against some of the darker, moodier pieces on display at other tables (I love dark and moody! But variety is fun, too.)
Our very own Christian Angeles was also in attendance alongside Jad Kaado. The pair had their book The Tomb of Baalberith available as well as other books and goodies.
