After becoming the first artist to perform during the extended half-time of the Copa América final, Barranquilla singer Shakira spoke about the defeat of the Colombian national team against Argentina in the final of the most important soccer championship on the continent.

Through her social media, the singer, who was also in charge of producing the anthem for this edition, shared a heartfelt message with the Tricolor and its fans throughout Latin America.

Far from being disappointed or giving a low rating, Shakira said: “I am proud of my team. Thank you Colombia for filling us with so much emotion. And thank you to my Latin American people for their support and affection.”

In her performance of just over seven minutes, the Colombian performed Hips Don’t Lie –which was interrupted to encourage the team: “I love you, Colombia!”– Congratulate yourself, TQG and Puntería.

“Shakira is an extraordinary South American star who has dazzled the entire world (…) Her songs are sung and danced to in every corner of the planet, turning her art into a global phenomenon that crosses borders and is enjoyed by millions of people. We are sure that her performance on the stage of the Copa América USA 2024 will reinforce the message of healthy passion and unity through sport,” he said.

How much was Shakira paid for her debut performance at halftime of the final?

Shakira became a trending topic on social media after her performance at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Copa América at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. This historic event marked the first time that a show was held during halftime of the tournament, which thrilled more than 65,000 attendees.

Despite criticism from some fans who considered the performance repetitive, the Colombian artist performed four of her hits: Hips Don’t Lie, TQG, Te Felicito and Puntería. In addition, Shakira took the opportunity to support the Colombian national team, which lost to Argentina by one goal. The performance included dancers, 3D effects, fireworks and advanced technology, reported Argentine journalist Juan Etchegoyen on Mitre Live. During her seven minutes on stage, Shakira secured earnings of USD$2,000,000.

Shakira’s performance was not the only musical event of the day. Before the start of the match, singer Karol G performed the first verses of the Colombian national anthem, wearing a combination of a leather skirt, high black boots and a Colombian national team jersey, cheering thousands of spectators in the stadium.

Conmebol’s investment in the final was significant, leading Etchegoyen to comment that while football generates sufficient revenue, the amount is still surprising.
