In the absence of a much-needed Daft Punk comeback, 1,000 drones breathed life into their music in the robots’ hometown of Paris over the weekend.

10 days after Americans blow off their fingers fireworks in honor of their nation’s independence, French citizens take part in similar festivities for Bastille Day, the annual holiday commemorating the major turning point of the French Revolution. While each year sees large-scale celebrations all over the country, 2024 was extra special as the country prepares to host the Summer Olympics in Paris in less than two weeks.

On Sunday night, the City of Paris organized a massive fireworks display featuring 1,000 drones around the iconic Eiffel Tower. From Gesaffelstein and Justice to Kavinsky and Jean-Michel Jarre, many electronic music greats have come from France over the years, so the show’s organizers had plenty of choices for their soundtrack. The honor ultimately went to Daft Punk as well as one of today’s most beloved dance music artists, Madeon.

Madeon’s track “You’re On,” from his 2015 debut album Adventure, was featured in a portion of the show as the drones coalesced to form a running figure holding a heart. They also shifted into the logo of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to the sounds of Daft Punk’s 2013 single “Contact,” which appears on their final album Random Access Memories.
