At least two people have died and 21 remain missing following an avalanche that buried several homes in the center of the Indonesian island of rescue teams report this Friday.

The landslide occurred on Thursday afternoon in the town of Cibeunying and was linked to the “heavy rains that flooded the area”, the National Search and Rescue Agency points out today in a statement.

According to preliminary data, emergency operations have managed to recover two lifeless bodies and have rescued 23 survivors, while trying to locate another 21 people.

The images provided by emergency teams show a mountain of earth on top of several buildings.

Rescuers have been working on the ground since last night in search of possible survivors trapped in the rubble of houses.
