The Colombian president, Gustavo Petroasked this Friday the Organization of American States (OAS) to act in the face of the “coup d’état” that occurs in Guatemala after the Public Ministry said that the elections won by Bernardo Arévalo de León are not valid.
“We are facing a coup d’état in Guatemala. The OAS must act immediately. All support to the Guatemalan people. “A Prosecutor’s Office that has covered up drug trafficking and corruption acts against democracy”expressed the president on the social network X.
The Prosecutor’s Office, which Arévalo de León accused last September of carrying out a “coup” against him, he indicated that the electoral records used in the elections “are null and void” given that “were not authorized” initially by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
The alleged invalidation of the electoral results was presented by prosecutor Leonor Morales in a press conference, in which she said that the elections for president, deputies, mayor and deputies to the Central American Parliament must be annulled.

As an alleged reason for the annulment of the elections, Morales stated that there is an administrative irregularity since the electoral records used are not those originally approved by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal.
That is why the OAS condemned “the attempted coup d’état by the Public Ministry of Guatemala” for the attempt by prosecutors Rafael Curruchiche and Morales to annul the elections.

Since Arévalo de León won the Guatemalan presidential elections on June 25, the Public Ministry, led by the attorney general Consuelo Porrashas tried on several occasions to reverse the verdict of the polls.
The actions of the Prosecutor’s Office led the United States to sanction the leadership of the Guatemalan Public Ministry on July 12 for corruption.
