Ghetto Capitalism is an eclectic and wonderful EP and there’s a vital message behind it all but “You Can Do It” is music that sounds like it’s having a heart attack and I love it. It’s the third track on Jaymie Silk‘s Ghetto Capitalism EP, his latest from !K7. “You Can Do It” is so heavy I think it might fall straight through the floor when it drops.

Hold in your mind for a minute Tyree Cooper’s “Video Crash” — his take on the legendary “Video Clash” and probably my favorite version of it. Take those cathode tube test pattern chords and speed them up like hot atoms until they start crash into each other and spark small detonations. Now imagine it’s music. “You Can Do It” is a transformational track, one that should launch a new genre or spawn a horde of imitators, some flattering and some not, but either way it’s blown a hole in the roof of the universe and I’m not entirely the same.

There is something more going on here, and when I picked the pieces of my head up and put them back together again I think I got it. Jaymie Silk approaches this record like an audio recording of something unrecordable on audio tape — like Basquiat painting Defacement and creating a new visual language to confront things that had never been addressed in painting before. It’s a work that casts a pitiless floodlight on its subject while also taking into account the spectator. “DEFACEMENT©?” Forks.

According to Silk, Ghetto Capitalism is inspired by “the powerful works of James Baldwin,” structured as a narrative that examines “how globalization and the digital era have confined us into consumption-driven niches. The distinction between mainstream and underground music has faded, leaving only follower counts as a differentiator….

“In an era where dancefloors are becoming empty, Ghetto Capitalism “emerges as an act of defiance, whether played through club speakers or personal headphones, for those who cherish music and find themselves navigating a pixelated reality alone.”
