Five soldiers died when a US aircraft crashed in the Mediterranean Sea during a training exercise, the US Military Command in Europe (Eucom) announced on Sunday.

“During a routine training refueling mission, a US military plane carrying five troops crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. The five soldiers on board the aircraft died,” Eucom declared in a statement.

According to the command, the accident occurred last Friday afternoon in the eastern Mediterranean, without specifying the model of the damaged ship or where it came from. However, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin issued a statement of condolence in which he identified the device as a helicopter and noted that it crashed on Saturday morning.

The United States has several military bases in the area and recently deployed a second aircraft carrier as reinforcement to the Mediterranean to deter any attempt to bring the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas becomes a regional conflict.
