The day Don Omar met Maradona but didn’t know who he was
CHRONOLOGY:
Just over a month before three years have passed since the death of Diego Armando Maradona, the “King of Reggaetón” Don Omar remembered the day he met him in person.
During an interview with Raúl de Molina for the program “El Gordo y la Flaca” that is broadcast on the American network Univisión, Don Omar revealed that in 2005, the Argentine soccer legend personally invited him to his television program called “ “The Night of the Ten.”
To the surprise of his entire work team, Don Omar had no idea who Diego Maradona was.
And you may wonder… How is it possible that you don’t know who Maradona is? Well, in Puerto Rico, soccer is not a very consumed sport; on this small Caribbean island, the sports that are most practiced and consumed are basketball and baseball.
But returning to the story of Don Omar and Maradona… what happened next?
Well, after being advised on who this Maradona guy was who had contacted his inner circle to invite him to his program, the reggaeton singer accepted and left for the country for the meeting.
Upon arriving at his hotel, he received a call from Diego himself to welcome him and show his respect.
Finally the expected day arrived. Don Omar appeared on the channel and from the moment he entered everyone started applauding. Maradona was in the audience, he was the first to stand up to applaud him and immediately everyone in the studio began to do the same.
Maradona walked onto the set, shook hands with Don, hugged him and started crying. In that program, the former captain and world champion with Argentina revealed the reason why he invited him to his show.
Apparently, during his stay in Cuba, Maradona went through one of the worst moments of his life and Don Omar’s music was what made him happy.
Don Omar, in this interview, also remembered the hard times he went through with his father.
He said that the estrangement was due to the fact that his father gave a public interview talking about him and he felt betrayed.
Today, Don Omar greatly regrets having distanced himself from him because during that time, his father became seriously ill and since he had no communication with him, he never found out.
Thank heaven, they were able to settle their differences and today they are more united than ever.
It is worth noting that Don Omar is soon going to release an album called “Back to Reggaeton”, which has generated a lot of expectation in his fans because this would be the true “comeback” that everyone was waiting for.
