The high representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrellwarned today in Beirut about what “even war has rules” and asked that Israel use other means to eliminate the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas that do not lead to deathof so many innocent people”.
“Even war has rules and there are international humanitarian norms that have to be respected. As I have said many times, one horror does not justify another“said the Spanish diplomat in a press conference with the Lebanese Foreign Minister, Abadalah bou Habib.
“Israel has declared a war to eradicate Hamasthere must be another way to eradicate Hamas that doesn’t mean so many innocent people die“, considered the head of European diplomacy.
Borrell is on an official visit to the Lebanon amid a new peak of tension between the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Israel, after last Tuesday a bombing attributed to the Jewish State killed the number two of Hamas, Saleh al Arourioutside of Beirut.
The diplomat considered that it is possible to avoid a war and insisted on the importance of dialogue.

“Nobody will win with a regional conflict, I am here to explore the situation and contribute to a way out of the crisis (…) Diplomatic channels must remain open to send a signal that war is not the only option, it is the worst option”, he stated during his speech.
Within the framework of these efforts, this morning he met with the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (FINL), the Spanish general Aroldo Lazaro; the lebanese prime minister, Najib Mikatiand the Lebanese Foreign Minister, while tomorrow he will continue with his mission in Saudi Arabia.
