JUDAS PRIEST has released the official video for his new single, «The Serpent And The King«. Find out below.
Rob Halford recently sat down with Zane Lowe in Apple Music 1 to talk of “The Serpent And The King«, from his next album «Invincible Shield«, which will go on sale on March 8. Halford talks about the meaning behind the new song and how it touches on topics they’ve never written about before, which are a reflection of current times. Below they delve into how heavy metal is often misunderstood, and his bandmate’s battle Glenn Tipton against Parkinson’s. Quotes below courtesy of Zane Lowe in Apple Music 1.
About “The Serpent And The King«:
«JUDAS PRIEST screaming heavy metal for over 50 years. The passion and the power and the love and the dedication and all the other glorious words that can be used in this band, JUDAS PRIESTroar in this song, ‘The Serpent And the King‘. It’s just another definition of this particular style of metal, this intense, relentless, unwavering, invincible focus and the love we have in this band for this particular song. And we have talked about many things. We have talked about the sinner, we have talked about the saints, and we have talked about the painkiller, but we have never talked about God and the devil stepping into the universal boxing ring, so to speak. That’s the message. We’re talking about this ancient thing that’s been going on since the universe began. It’s God, it’s the devil. He is black and white, he is positive, he is negative, he is good, he is bad, he is love, he is hate. It’s all these different textures wrapped up in this fierce, non-stop, relentless theme,’The Serpent and the King‘».

Halford talk to Apple Music about how JUDAS PRIEST has never been afraid to explore different territories:
«This band has never been afraid to venture into different territories. This is the band that can be your pain reliever. This is the band that can be your turbo lover. This is the gang that can break the law or move in together after midnight. We have been sending these multiple messages within the words ofJUDAS PRIEST since the band exists.
About how the themes of «The Serpent and the King» reflect current times, Halford says:
«But this topic of ‘Serpent and the King‘ couldn’t be more relevant right now, man. I don’t have to talk about current affairs on the news. But yes, this is it. This is furious right now, this fight that is taking place. The good news is that the battle always ends in the right place, which is, good defeats evil. Love always wins. Love will always be victorious. No matter how dark, how bleak, how terrible things may be, love will emerge, light will shine, power will reign, and humanity will progress. This is the context of all the imagery and fantasy of ‘The snake and the king‘».
About his speech at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the misunderstanding of heavy metal, Rob says:
«Even in today’s world, although we have greater acceptance of metal on a global scale, some sectors of society still consider it a little strange, a little different, a little dangerous. And there’s nothing wrong with that. I love danger because it can be provocative and it can make people think and talk and open up a form of dialogue and possibilities. So I love that part of what still exists in metal, especially with the way some of us look. Some of us look quite intimidating to those outside the circle. I love all that part of complexity that metal can offer you if you delve into it.
But in terms of this really powerful, beautiful, tangible relationship that we have in this global metal community, it’s even closer now. You pick up your iPhone and you’re talking to someone in Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Rio, New York, Brazil or wherever. That’s the way the metal community is united, and it’s a very real pure human resource for each other in terms of support. Not only in the world of music, but beyond. So this whole thing about inclusivity, acceptance, it doesn’t matter who you marry, what you look like, how much money you have or don’t have. None of that is in that heavy metal world. We address you in the purest and most real human sense.
About his bandmate’s struggle Glenn Tipton against Parkinson’s, Halford reveals:
“It’s extraordinary. It’s very difficult to put it into words, because it is love and in its purest sense, the emotion and the love and the belief and the care and the sharing that we have in the lives of others, is probably deeper now than it has ever been. been, especially looking at Glenn. And he is certainly a hero in the truest sense, because although these challenges have come into his life, he has not let them stop him. Of course, the horrible thing about Parkinson’s is that he can steal certain things that gave you life like he did in metal to Glenn in his incredible guitar articulation.
The great news is that the hands of Glenn They’re all over the album’Invincible Shield‘. She is playing here, there and everywhere. Richie has done a remarkable job in terms of honoring and paying homage to some of the styles of Glennbut Glenn is so active and so involved in PRIEST as it always was. And I appreciate you asking about him because he’s the guy, he was there at the forefront of the metal scene, his guitar playing and the style of him and the distinction of him and the articulation of him is really, really powerful.” .
