For VITRIOL, from Portland, Oregon, nothing is easy. Nothing. The title of her second album for Century Media«Suffer & Become“, says it all.

“The title sums it all up,” says the guitarist and vocalist Kyle Rasmussen. «I took things to a point while making this album where it almost became unsustainable. Things that were supposed to be done in weeks took months. “It wasn’t easy, but I think it was suffering well spent.”

At the core of «Suffer & Become»underlies a deep feeling of extremity and restlessness. This same essence defines VITRIOL as the vanguard in death metal’s evolutionary path, a sonic landscape characterized by its profound darkness, density and infusion of nanotechnological precision interwoven with intense, seething emotions. Not easy to listen to. Since its formation in 2013, Rasmussen and his collaborator, bassist and co-vocalist Adam Roethlisberger have worked with a unique vision: to take the genre to its breaking point and invent a new paradigm without compromises in the process. VITRIOL It’s a master class in pain, and that’s just the starting point.

Rasmussen He is very reflective when recounting the initial journey of VITRIOL to the confines of extremism.

“I was hungry for something that wouldn’t punch me,” he says. Kyle of the caustic declaration of intent of VITRIOL which detonated in the realm of extreme metal with the demo «Antichrist» from 2013. «Death metal was important to me because it talks about an aggressiveness, a frustration that I had when I was younger. It wasn’t just a sonic connection, but an emotional connection, making music almost a means to an end. What I saw happening in extreme metal at that time was almost an elimination of emotion in favor of musicality, that fire, that spirit of urine and vinegar. “Basically, I wanted something that would want me dead.”

With the 2017 EP «Pain Will Define Their Death«, VITRIOL established itself as one of the most intransigent exponents of the underground, which led them to join forces with Century Media. The resulting album, “To Bathe from the Throat of Cowardice» from 2019, was nothing less than a crucial next step for the band and the genre itself. Hitting the road that year, first in Europe with Nile and then in the United States with Cattle Decapitation and Atheistand then with Vader before the onset of Covid, Vitriol quickly established themselves as as uncompromising a force on stage as they are on record.

“Do ‘Black Seeds of Vengeance‘ next to Karl Sanders [de Nile] on stage in Europe on our first tour was nothing short of a ‘pinch me’ moment,” he recalls. Kyle from the first days of tour VITRIOL. «More recently, we were on tour with Morbid Angeland Steve Tuckerwho is my favorite vocalist Morbid Angelcame out of his dressing room wearing a T-shirt VITRIOL and exclaimed that we were one of his new favorite bands. That blew me away as a fan, first and foremost – a ‘Fuck!’ moment. total”.

«Suffer & Become» is nothing less than a reference point for VITRIOL (completed by guitarist Daniel Martinez and Matt Kilner). It is as dense and blackened as everything that has arisen from the vision of Rasmussen of sonic disorder. From the beginning of the first song, “Shame and Its Afterbirth«, there is a new sense of openness, grandeur and occasional beauty in the sonic arsenal of VITRIOL.

“I wanted an album with a very marked duality,” he says. Kyle. «Very high highs and very low lows. We are very familiar with the lows, but not so familiar with the triumphant highs. I wanted the album to have more of a sense of optimism, both lyrically and musically. “I wanted the album to convey a sense of optimism that is probably lost in the black maelstrom that is the first album.”

Produced by Rasmussen and mixed by Dave Otero (Archspire, Cattle Decapitation), «Suffer & Become» it’s not just the sound of VITRIOL raising the stakes in the death metal musical career; It is also the sound of salvation for your driving force.

“Living in the world of that first album was very difficult for me,” he says. Rasmussen. «It is not a pleasant place. It was very intentionally unbalanced, in the same way that a horror movie is. “I wanted a healthier world to live in, and I think I have achieved that.”

It’s not that the composition and recording of «Suffer & Become»was something that would tear the soul apart. Rasmussen He toiled over the creation of the album in the studio, on tour in hotel rooms, to the point of meticulous obsession. Kyle is candid about the grueling recording process and its personal impact.

“The album is a bit like Jung’s Dante’s Inferno,” he says. «Going through the circles of my personal, psychological and spiritual hell and purposely refocusing it so that it is not the dark and deranged catharsis of the first album. This album is much more vulnerable.

Songs like “Weaponized Loss” either “The Flowers of Sadism» are what Kyle described as a “dark baptism” compared to the absolute darkness of “To Bathe…«. The sound of VITRIOL It’s still as cheerful and dark as ever, but with a glimmer of hope. VITRIOL has taken her trauma approach to the next level and discovered a new sense of beauty in blackness. «Suffer & Become» is death metal with a bloody, beating heart.
