The president of the Latin American Parliament of Venezuela, Angel Rodriguezcondemned this Tuesday that United Kingdom has decided to send a warship to Guyanain the midst of the dispute between both South American countries over the Guyana Essequibaof almost 160,000 square kilometers.
As reported on Sunday by the British BBC, the United Kingdom is preparing the shipment of the ship as “show of military and diplomatic support” to Guyanasomething that Rodríguez described this Tuesday “as a clear threat to peace in the region and a provocation that violates international law“, according to a press release from the Venezuelan Parliament.
“Sending this ship to Guyana – a former British colony – is a reckless and warlike measure that we strongly reject. We will not accept threats of any kind, no matter who they come from.“, stressed the Chavista legislator, cited in the writing, on behalf of the dozen deputies that make up the Venezuelan chapter of the Parlatino.
In his opinion, this announcement reveals “the clear intention of generating a confrontation” between Venezuela and Guyana that, after weeks of diplomatic tension, agreed on December 14 not to threaten each other and “avoid incidents” over the disputed territory, controlled by Georgetown.
That day, the leaders of Venezuela and Guyana, Nicolas Maduro and Irfaan Alirespectively, agreed on St. Vincent and the Grenadines reduce the tension that had escalated since December 3, when Venezuela approved, in a unilateral referendum, to annex the Essequiborich in oil and minerals.

A spokesperson for British Ministry of Defense confirmed last Thursday that the HMS Trenta British ship that had been deployed in the Caribbean to fight drug trafficking, has been reassigned after Venezuela’s threats to annex this territory that it has not controlled since 1899 and whose controversy is in the hands of the international Court of Justice (ICJ).
