A shooting at Charles University in Prague this Thursday caused an unspecified number of deaths and dozens of injuries, the Czech Police reported.

According to Czech emergency services spokesperson Jana Postova, eleven (11) people died – including the attacker – at the scene.

βAn unknown person opened fire shortly after 3:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. GMT) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Charles University of Prague, on Jan Palach Square,β in the heart of the capital, he said. Radio Prague International.
Equipped with a long gun with a telescopic sight, the aggressor continued shooting after law enforcement arrived at the scene, until he was finally killed.
βThe shooter has been eliminated! “At this moment the entire building is being evacuated and there are several dead and dozens of injured in the place,” wrote the Czech Police on their X account (formerly Twitter).
In another message, he urged citizens not to go out on the streets.
βAll emergency services are currently on site. We will provide more information as soon as possible“, indicated the police authority.
On social networks, students of the aforementioned faculty shared information about people who remained sheltered in the classrooms or in the university library, before the authorities began to evacuate the educational center.
Some media cited witnesses who said they heard an explosion.
The agents cordoned off the entire area and cut off traffic and public transportation in its surroundings.
